Sara Beth always got her way.
萨拉·贝丝总是按她的方式做事。
If she wanted to stay up late, her mother let her.
如果她想熬夜，她的妈妈就让她熬。
If she wanted to eat nothing but ice cream, her mother let her.
如果她只想吃冰淇淋，她的妈妈也让她吃。
All Sara Beth had to say was, “I want it.”
萨拉所有说的全部就是“我想要那个”。
And any toy was hers.

One day Sara Beth and her mother passed a store.

In the window was a mama doll and a baby doll.

The baby doll had yellow hair and a pretty smile.

“I want her,” said Sara Beth.

She pulled her mother into the store.

“How much is the baby doll?” Sara Beth asked.

The lady smiled.

“The mama doll and the baby doll are a set.

They cost $50.”

Sara Beth stamped her foot.

“I don’t want the mama.
“我不想要那个妈妈。
I only want the baby!”

Sara Beth’s mother paid the lady.

“Here is all the money.

But we will just take the baby doll.”

Sara Beth took her new doll home.

She took it out of the box.

No. Sara Beth’s eyes were playing tricks on her.

Then Sara Beth put the doll beside her bed.

That night Sara Beth woke up.

“MAMA!” someone was shouting.

It was her new doll!

The lady had not said it was a talking doll.

Did the doll look mad?

Sara Beth was scared.

Sara Beth shouted for her mother and dived under the covers.

“What’s wrong, dear?” her mother asked.

“My doll! She was shouting at me.
“我的娃娃！她在冲着我大喊大叫。
And she looks mad,” Sara Beth cried.

“She looks the same to me,” said Sara Beth’s mother.

Sara Beth took another look.
萨拉·贝丝又看了看。
The doll was smiling.

Sara Beth shook it.
萨拉·贝丝摇了摇它。
But the doll did not say “Mama.”
但娃娃没有说“妈妈”。
It did not say anything at all.
它什么也没有说。
“You must have been having a bad dream,” said her mother.
“你肯定是做了一个恶梦。”她妈妈说，
“Go back to sleep. Your doll is fine.”
“回去睡觉吧，你的娃娃好好儿的呢。”
So Sara Beth went back to sleep.
于是萨拉·贝丝回去睡觉了。
But soon she woke up again.
但不久后她又醒了。
Something was poking her.
有东西在戳她。
It was the doll!
是那个娃娃！
It was in Sara Beth’s bed.
它在萨拉·贝丝的床上。
How did it get there?

“MAMA! I WANT MY MAMA!” the doll shouted.
“妈妈！我要我的妈妈！”娃娃喊道
“TAKE ME BACK!” Sara Beth nodded.

She was too scared to say a word.

The very next day Sara Beth took the doll back to the store.

The lady put the doll in the window.
那位女士把娃娃放到橱窗里。
It was next to the mama doll again.
它又在妈妈旁边了。
Sara Beth looked back just once.
萨拉·贝丝只回头看了一次。
Yes.
很好。
The doll was smiling again.
娃娃又笑了。
